D. azureus, also know as the blue poison frog, has long been a staple in the hobby. With the lure of this frogs striking blue color it is easy to understand why some people enter into the hobby just to own this frog.
The spotting on the azureus is just as variable as the colors. Their spots can be large and black to very fine and almost non existent.
The azureus is a large species that is best kept in male/ female pairs due to their territorial nature. For this reason we do not recommend the azureus for the beginner keeper.
The azureus is primarily a terrestrial species that a pair could be housed comfortably in a 20gal size vivarium.
Ideal temperature range is 75-80 degrees. Temperatures warmer than 80 degrees are not recommended as the azureus, like most other dart frogs, will heat stress easily.
Males of this species are easily identified by their smaller slimmer body, enlarged front toepads and their soft metallic buzzing calls. Females are considerably larger than the males, and will display smaller front toepads.
