D. leucomelas, also known as the yellow banded dart frog, is a beautiful dart frog native to Venezuela.

With their bright coloration and ease of care make this dart frog a good choice if you are just starting in the hobby. The leucomelas is one of the few dart frogs that can be housed in a small group provided they have adequate space.

D. leucomelas is a very outgoing species that can be observed throughout the day foraging for food or socializing with other leucomelas.

Males of this species tend to be a little smaller and slimmer than the females. The females will be easy to identify when they come into breeding season as they will take on a more rounded or plump appearance compared to the males.

The males call is a bird like trill that can easily be heard outside of the vivarium.
